The Query Analytics Report page is comprised of two reports: the Zone Query Details Report, and the Host Query Details Report. Reporting time-frames are returned using the GMT time zone.
The Zone Query Details Report is designed to provide aggregated zone query volumes for multiple zones within your account, which will be displayed by default when clicking on the Query Analytics report from the list of available reports.
The Host Query Details Report provides aggregated host query volumes for one or all hosts within a zone. This report is implemented as a “drill down” report, designed to get more granular information on a host basis from the Zone Query Details Report.
For users with access to multiple accounts, you can specify the Account in which you want to view the responses for. To view this report, click on the Reports tab on the left-hand side of the screen, and then from the drop-down list, select Query Analytics.
The Query results will be displayed using the Short Scale Prefix format.
-
K = Thousand
-
M = Million
-
B = Billion
-
T = Trillion
-
Q = Quadrillion
Upon loading the report, you’ll see two charts displaying zone query results, as well as a table of all of the zone names you currently have access to.
Ultra2 Enabled Accounts
For those accounts which have the UltraDNS2 feature enabled, the Query Analytics report will display an additional configuration drop-down menu, that allows users to change the view of the report details. The report data and table columns will display the same type of data, but this allows our UltraDNS2 customers greater flexibility to see their data in greater granularity.
UltraDNS – Selecting this option from the drop-down menu will only display the standard zones that are configured for the UltraDNS service.
UltraDNS2 – Selecting this option from the drop-down menu will only display the zones that are configured using the Ultra2 feature.
UltraDNS & UltraDNS2 – Selecting this option from the drop-down menu will display all zones of the available zones for the account being displayed.
Please note that when selecting UltraDNS & UltraDNS2 as the dropdown option, the displayed report data will not indicate which zone is the UltraDNS, and which is UltraDNS2. We recommend one of two options as a workaround.
-
Export the UltraDNS and the UltraDNS2 reports individually so that you can clearly identify which zones are associated to each feature.
-
Export the UltraDNS & UltraDNS2 report data and then compare the exported zone list to the Domains page, which has the column indicating which zone is Ultra2 enabled.
Top 5 Queried Zones
The Top 5 Queried Zones chart displays the Zone Query Details doughnut chart for the five zones with the largest query volume. By default, this chart will display the results for the last seven (7) calendar days. The chart displays each zone's query volume as a percentage. Hovering over a zone name or query count will highlight the zone on the chart and display the percentage of queries compared to the other zones. The Top 5 Queried Zones chart will update daily, so you will be seeing the query results up to yesterday's date. Additionally, usage of any of the filtering options will update the chart to reflect the new Top 5 Queried Zones to match the search criteria used (zone name, date range and account name).
Responses for Zone
The Responses for Zone chart displays the specific Zone Query details for the zone name listed in the Zone Details table (below the charts). By default, this chart will display the query results for the first zone name in the list. Selecting a zone name from the list will update the chart to display the Top 5 query responses for that zone. The following Response Codes (RCODES) are returned:
-
NO ERROR – The number of responses that were returned without errors.
-
FORMERR – The number of responses that were returned due to a Name Server unable to interpret the request due to a formatting error.
-
NOT IMP – The number of responses that were returned due to the Name Server not supporting the specified Opcode.
-
REFUSED – The number of responses that were returned due to the Name Server refusing to perform the specified operation for policy or security reasons.
-
SERV FAIL – The number of responses that were returned due to a Name Server encountering an internal error (i.e. an operating system error or forwarding timeout) while processing the request.
-
NX DOMAIN - The number of responses that were returned due to a domain name that should exist but does not (or could not be found).
Search and Filters
Date Range
The current date (determined by GMT time zone) cannot be selected for this report. |
The Date Range search feature allows you to select a customized date range to view query responses for. The date range cannot exceed more than a 31-day time period, and cannot go back more than 13 months prior to today’s date. Clicking in the Date Range search field allows you to select the desired date range and will highlight the allowable dates in which you can search. After making your selection, and clicking the Apply button, the Top 5 Responses for Zone and the Zone Name details table will update to display the corresponding data.
Zone Filter
The Zone Filter selection for the Query Analytics Report allows you to specify the zone(s) to be displayed in the report, instead of every zone associated to an account. The Zone Filter option displays two sections: Available, which displays the zones that can be added (based upon the account(s) you have access to) for the report, and Selected, which identifies the zones you have selected to be displayed on the report.
By default, the Available list displays twenty zone names. A maximum of 250 Zone Names can be selected. To view more, select the Show More option to have an additional twenty zone names added to the Available list. There are several ways in which to select the zones that you want to display.
Add a Single Zone
-
To add a single zone to the Selected list, double-click on a zone name from the Available list to have it appear in the Selected list, or single-click on a zone name so that it is highlighted, and then select the single arrow (pointing to the right) icon.
Add Multiple Zones
-
To add multiple zones to the Selected list, single-click on each zone from the list and then select the single arrow (pointing to the right) icon to move all of the highlighted zones in the Selected list.
Add All Zones
-
To add all of the zones that appear in the Available list, select the double-arrow icon (pointing to the right). After doing so, a new twenty zones will be populated to the Available list.
Edit
-
The Edit option allows you to manually enter zone names into a free-text box. When providing multiple zone names, each zone name must be entered on its own line (single line entry). The use of commas, tabs, or the multi-line special character are not supported. Each zone name that has been added to the Selected field will appear on the Edit screen. If a zone name is entered in the Edit field that matches a zone name in the Available or Selected sections, the duplicate zone name will be removed.
Removing Zones
Removing zone names from the Selected list can be completed by performing the same steps listed above for adding a zone, except using the opposite direction facing arrow(s).
-
Single Zone Removal - Double-click a zone name, or select a zone name and select the single arrow (pointing left) icon.
-
Multiple Zone Removal - Single-click all the desired zone names so that they are highlighted, and then click the single arrow (pointing left) icon.
-
Remove all Zones - Select the double arrow (pointing left) icon to clear the Selected list.
-
Edit - Click the Edit button, and then manually delete any of the zone names from the list.
Account Filter
For users with access to multiple accounts, the Account Name drop-down menu allows you to select accounts you may have access to display Zone Name results for. By default, the drop-down filter will be set to All, displaying all the zones that you have access to. Selecting a specific Account from the drop-down menu, and then clicking the Apply button will update the Zone Details table to display zone names associated to the selected Account.
Select Columns
The Select Columns button allows you to configure the columns of data that are displayed in the table. The Responses column cannot be removed from the list, but the list of additional data types can be customized. If more than eight columns are selected, a horizontal slide bar will appear at the bottom of the table and allow you to view the additional columns you selected.
Export
The Export button will create a .csv file that will display up to 100,000 records of Zone Name details for any current filtering options that have been enabled (Date Range, Zone Name, Selected Columns). After clicking the Export button, a message will appear in the upper right-hand corner of the screen indicated the export request has been created. Once available, the report can be downloaded from the Tasks list.
Zone Details Table
The Zone Details table displays the query response details for each zone in your account, or that you have access to (if you are associated to multiple accounts). Clicking on a zone name from the list will highlight the zone details, as well as update the Responses for Zone chart (the second do nut chart). The Zone Name, Responses, AX Domain, and SRV Fail fields can be sorted either by ascending or descending order by clicking on the up or down arrow respectfully.
By default, 50 results will be displayed at a time for the Zone Details table. You can select a different page view number as you wish at the bottom of the screen. Use the left or right arrows to navigate to the next set of zone query details.
Clicking on the View (eye) icon next to a Zone Name will display the Responses for Host Names report for the selected zone.
Requested On
The Requested On details will display the last time the report was generated for the selected account.
Responses for Host Names
The Host Query Details Report provides aggregated host query volumes for one or all hosts within a zone. This is considered a “drill down” report, as a Zone Name had to be selected from the default Query Analytics – Zone Details table.
Please Note - The UltraDNS Reports display host details in the following manner, which may impact the Query Responses value.
-
If a Hostname is "defined" (has a record in the domain), and there were no queries during the selected time frame, the host will not appear in the report details.
-
If a Hostname is "undefined" (does not have an active record in the domain), but was queried during the selected time frame, the hostname will appear in the report details. This could beneficial if customers are querying a hostname that could possibly be redirected to/from.
Similar to the Zone Query Details page, the Host Query Details page shows two doughnut charts of data, as well as the Host Name details table.
The first doughnut chart displays the Top 5 Queried Hosts by response volume, while the second (right-most) doughnut chart displays the Responses for Host for the selected Host Name from the details table. Selecting a Host Name from the details table will only update the second doughnut chart.
-
The Date Range filter allows you to select a custom date range to view the Host Name response details.
-
The Host Name field allows you to provide the details for a single host name to view the specific details for.
-
After making any filtering selections, click the Apply button.
-
Clicking the Reset button will clear any filtering options configured, and then clicking the Apply button will re-load the default report details.
-
Clicking the Export button will create a .csv file displaying up to 10,000 rows of data for the Host Name details, and based upon any filtering criteria currently on the screen.
To return to the Query Analytics landing page that displays the Zone Details with your configured filtering options, click the Back button.
