This article explains how to check whether a domain is delegated to UltraDNS name servers when DNS changes made in UltraDNS are not visible to end users.
Symptoms
Use this article when DNS records have been created or updated in UltraDNS, but public DNS lookups do not return the expected UltraDNS record data.
This can happen when the domain is not delegated to UltraDNS name servers at the registrar or parent zone.
Why This Happens
DNS queries follow the domain delegation path from the root, to the top-level domain, to the authoritative name servers for the domain.
If the delegation path does not end at UltraDNS name servers, public DNS resolvers do not query UltraDNS for the domain. In that state, DNS changes made in the UltraDNS portal are stored in UltraDNS, but they are not used for public DNS resolution.
How to Check Domain Delegation
- Browse to digwebinterface.com.
- Enter the hostname you want to test in Hostnames or IP addresses. For example, enter
www.example.com. - Select the checkbox for Trace.
- Select Dig.
- Review the final name server records returned in the trace output.
How to Read the Result
If the final name server records in the trace output do not point to UltraDNS name servers, the domain is not delegated to UltraDNS for public DNS resolution.
In that case, queries for the hostname are sent to the name servers listed in the delegation path instead of UltraDNS.
Resolution
Contact your domain registrar or the organization that manages the parent zone delegation. Ask them to update the authoritative name servers for the domain to the assigned UltraDNS name servers.
After the delegation is updated, run the trace again and confirm that the final name server records point to UltraDNS name servers.
Expected Outcome
After the domain is delegated to UltraDNS name servers and DNS caches update, public DNS resolvers can query UltraDNS for the domain. DNS changes made in the UltraDNS portal can then be returned to end users.
Important Notes
- Creating or updating records in UltraDNS does not update domain delegation at the registrar.
- UltraDNS must be listed in the authoritative delegation path for public DNS queries to reach UltraDNS.
- If the domain uses a delegated subdomain, check the delegation for the exact hostname or zone being tested.
