This article explains how to create a new primary domain in UltraDNS by copying the configuration of an existing primary domain.
This method allows you to duplicate DNS records and zone configuration without manually recreating each record.
When to Use This Article
- You need to create a new domain with the same DNS configuration as an existing domain.
- You are duplicating a production configuration for staging or migration.
- You want to avoid manually recreating DNS records.
How Domain Copying Works
Copying a domain creates a new primary DNS zone using the records from an existing primary domain in your UltraDNS account.
The copied domain becomes an independent zone and after creation, changes made to one domain do not affect the other.
How to Create a New Primary Domain by Copying an Existing Domain
- Log in to the UltraDNS portal with an account that has domain management permissions.
- Navigate to the existing primary domain you want to copy.
- Select the option to copy or duplicate the domain.
- Enter the fully qualified domain name for the new primary domain.
- Review the copied configuration details.
- Click Save to create the new domain.
Verification
After saving, confirm that the new domain appears in your domain list.
Open the new zone and review the DNS records to ensure they match the source domain.
Update any records that must differ between the two domains.
Important Notes
- The new domain must be registered separately with a domain registrar.
- If UltraDNS will serve as the authoritative DNS provider, update name server delegation at the registrar.
- Copying a domain does not create an ongoing synchronization between the original and new zones.
