This article explains how to manage a subdomain in UltraDNS when the parent domain is hosted with another DNS provider.
Overview
To delegate a subdomain to UltraDNS, create the subdomain as a Primary domain in UltraDNS, add the required DNS records, and then add NS records for the subdomain in the parent domain zone at the current DNS provider.
When to Use This Article
- You want UltraDNS to host DNS records for a subdomain.
- The parent domain is hosted with another DNS provider.
- You need to delegate only the subdomain to UltraDNS instead of moving the full parent domain.
Before You Begin
- You must have access to create the subdomain as a domain in UltraDNS.
- You must know which UltraDNS name servers are assigned to the subdomain.
- You must be able to update the parent domain zone at the current DNS provider.
Steps
- Log in to UltraDNS.
- Create the subdomain as a
Primarydomain in UltraDNS. - Add the required DNS records to the subdomain in UltraDNS.
- Identify the UltraDNS name servers assigned to the subdomain.
- Contact the DNS provider that hosts the parent domain and confirm how to add
NSrecords in the parent domain zone. - In the parent domain zone, add
NSrecords using the subdomain name as the host name and the UltraDNS name servers as the name server targets.
Expected Outcome
After the parent domain zone delegates the subdomain to the UltraDNS name servers, DNS queries for the delegated subdomain are directed to UltraDNS.
Important Notes
- The
NSrecords for delegation must be added in the parent domain zone, not only inside the subdomain zone. - UltraDNS cannot add delegation records at another DNS provider. The provider hosting the parent domain zone must make that change.
