This article explains how to convert a secondary domain into a primary domain in UltraDNS.
Converting a domain changes UltraDNS from acting as a secondary DNS provider to becoming the authoritative primary DNS provider for the zone.
When to Use This Article
- You are migrating DNS management fully to UltraDNS.
- You no longer want to receive zone transfers from an external primary DNS provider.
- You want UltraDNS to become the authoritative source for DNS records.
What Changes When You Convert a Secondary Domain
A secondary domain in UltraDNS receives its DNS records from an external primary name server through zone transfers.
When you convert a secondary domain to a primary domain, UltraDNS becomes the authoritative source for the zone and no longer relies on external zone transfers.
After conversion, DNS records must be managed directly within UltraDNS.
How to Convert a Secondary Domain into a Primary Domain
- Log in to the UltraDNS portal with domain management permissions.
- Click Domains
- Click the secondary domain you want to convert.
- Locate the domain settings or configuration section.
- Select the option to convert the domain from secondary to primary.
- Confirm the conversion.
Verification
After conversion, confirm that the domain is listed as a primary domain in the UltraDNS portal.
Verify that DNS records are present and editable directly within the zone configuration. Ensure that zone transfer settings are no longer active.
Important Notes
- Once converted, UltraDNS will no longer receive zone transfers from the former primary DNS provider.
- Ensure that all required DNS records are present before updating name server delegation.
- Update name server delegation at your registrar if UltraDNS will serve as the authoritative DNS provider.
