This article explains how UltraDNS handles primary name server validation when adding a secondary zone.
It clarifies whether UltraDNS checks all configured primary name servers and what to expect during the secondary domain creation process.
When to Use This Article
- You are adding a secondary domain to UltraDNS.
- You have configured multiple primary name servers.
- You want to understand how UltraDNS validates primary servers during setup.
How UltraDNS Validates Primary Name Servers
When adding a secondary zone, UltraDNS attempts to perform a zone transfer from the configured primary name server.
If multiple primary name servers are provided, UltraDNS will attempt to retrieve the zone from the listed servers.
Successful secondary configuration depends on at least one accessible primary name server allowing AXFR from UltraDNS.
If none of the configured primary servers permit zone transfer, the secondary zone will not be added successfully.
What This Means for Configuration
- At least one primary name server must be reachable.
- Zone transfer (AXFR) must be permitted from UltraDNS IP addresses.
- Firewall rules must allow TCP port 53 between the primary server and UltraDNS.
Verification
After adding the secondary domain, confirm that the zone populates successfully in the UltraDNS portal.
If the zone does not populate or displays transfer errors, verify that at least one primary name server allows zone transfer and is accessible from UltraDNS.
Important Notes
- If multiple primary name servers are configured, ensure all are consistently configured for zone transfer.
- Incorrect or unreachable primary name servers may delay or prevent successful secondary setup.
