This article explains how to configure NS delegation records in a parent zone and create a separate subdomain zone in the same UltraDNS account. For example, the parent zone could be example.com and the subdomain zone could be sub.example.com.
When to Use This Article
- You want to create a separate zone for a subdomain.
- The parent zone and subdomain zone will be managed in the same UltraDNS account.
- You need to add NS records in the parent zone to delegate the subdomain.
Before You Begin
- Have access to the UltraDNS account containing the parent zone.
- Identify the full subdomain name, such as
sub.example.com. - Have the nameserver hostnames to use for the subdomain delegation.
- Determine the TTL to use for the delegation records.
Add the Delegation Records in the Parent Zone
NS records identify the nameservers responsible for a zone. Add one delegation NS record for each nameserver responsible for the subdomain zone.
- Log in to UltraDNS.
- Click Domains.
- Click the parent domain, such as
example.com. - Scroll to NS (Nameservers).
- Click ADD+.
- In Zone Delegation, enter the subdomain label. For
sub.example.comunder the parent zoneexample.com, entersub. - In Name Server, enter the full hostname of a nameserver responsible for the subdomain zone.
- Enter the TTL value.
- If you need to add another nameserver, click Save and add another. Enter the same Zone Delegation value, the next Name Server hostname, and the TTL. Repeat for each additional nameserver.
- Click Save after entering the final nameserver.
Create the Subdomain Zone
- Click Domains.
- Click ADD+.
- In Domain, enter the full subdomain name, such as
sub.example.com. - Under Select Domain Type, select Primary Domain.
- Under Record Import, select Don't Import.
- Click Submit.
- Click the newly created subdomain zone.
- Review the records in the subdomain zone and add any additional records required.
Check the Configuration
- Confirm that the subdomain appears as a separate entry under Domains.
- In the parent zone, check that the delegation NS records use the intended subdomain label and nameserver hostnames.
- Open the subdomain zone and check that the required records are present.
Important Notes
Records associated with the subdomain automatically transfer from the parent zone to the new subdomain zone, except for CNAME records referring to the subdomain.
