This article explains whether SSL/TLS certificates can be purchased directly through UltraDNS. UltraDNS does not sell or issue certificates.
Certificates must be obtained from a trusted Certificate Authority and then uploaded for use with HTTPS Web Forwarding.
When to Use This Article
- You are asking UltraDNS to sell or provide an SSL certificate.
- You need clarification on how to obtain a certificate for HTTPS redirects.
- You are unsure whether certificate issuance is handled within UltraDNS.
Why UltraDNS Does Not Issue Certificates
UltraDNS is a DNS hosting and traffic management platform. SSL/TLS certificate issuance is performed by Certificate Authorities.
While UltraDNS integrates with certificate services and allows certificate uploads, the purchase and issuance process occurs separately through a trusted Certificate Authority.
How to Obtain a Certificate
To secure HTTPS redirects or other services requiring a certificate, follow these steps:
- Select a trusted Certificate Authority. DigiCert is the parent company of UltraDNS and provides a full range of SSL/TLS certificate options.
- Purchase the appropriate certificate type, such as single-domain, wildcard, or multi-domain (SAN), depending on your requirements.
- Complete the required Domain Control Validation process.
- Download the issued certificate files.
- Upload the certificate into UltraDNS under Certificate Management before applying it to an HTTPS Web Forwarding record.
Alternative: Managed Certificate Option
UltraDNS also offers an Automated Managed Certificate feature for HTTPS Web Forwarding. When enabled, this feature uses DigiCert CertCentral integration to automate certificate issuance, deployment, and renewal.
The certificate is still issued by DigiCert as the Certificate Authority, but lifecycle management is handled through the integration.
Verification
If a certificate has been properly issued and uploaded, it will appear in the Certificate Management dashboard with a status of Valid. You can then apply it to HTTPS Web Forwarding records without browser security warnings.
Important Notes
- UltraDNS cannot manually create or issue certificates.
- Certificate validation steps may require adding DNS records to your UltraDNS zone.
- If you have a DigiCert Account Manager, they can assist with certificate selection and purchasing.
