This article explains why a domain may be removed from an UltraDNS account after a validated removal request is received.
This can occur when another UltraDNS account attempts to add the same domain and the domain's current authoritative nameserver delegation no longer matches the nameservers associated with the existing UltraDNS account.
What This Means
A domain can exist in an UltraDNS account, but DNS authority for that domain is determined by the nameservers configured at the registrar.
The registrar delegation identifies which DNS provider is authoritative for the domain.
If the domain is no longer delegated to the nameservers associated with the existing UltraDNS account, that account may no longer be serving authoritative DNS for the domain.
Why This Happens
UltraDNS reviews a domain removal request when another UltraDNS account attempts to add a domain that already exists in a different UltraDNS account.
During review, UltraDNS checks the domain's current authoritative nameserver delegation.
If the domain is no longer delegated to the nameserver set associated with the existing account, and the delegation aligns with a different UltraDNS configuration, the domain may be eligible for removal from the existing account.
WHOIS information may also be reviewed when available. WHOIS visibility can vary depending on registry rules, registrar data, or privacy protection.
Nameserver delegation is the primary DNS signal used to determine which configuration is currently authoritative for the domain.
Notification Process
Before a domain is removed, UltraDNS follows a notification process that gives the current account an opportunity to respond.
- Initial notification
- An email is sent explaining that a removal request was received.
- Follow-up notification
- If no response is received, a follow-up email may be sent after approximately 24 hours.
- Final notice and removal
- If no response is received after the final notice period, the domain may be removed from the account.
Review timing is handled with business hours in mind. Weekends, holidays, and the timing of the original notice may affect when removal is completed.
What You Should Do
If you receive a domain removal notification and believe the domain should remain in your UltraDNS account, respond to the notification as soon as possible.
Include any relevant information showing that your account should continue managing authoritative DNS for the domain. This allows the request to be reviewed before any removal action is completed.
If the domain should no longer be managed in your account, no action is required unless the notification asks for additional information.
Important Notes
- A domain may be removed after a validated request is received and reviewed.
- Removal requests can occur when another UltraDNS account attempts to add the same domain.
- Nameserver delegation is the primary DNS indicator of which configuration is currently authoritative for the domain.
- WHOIS information may support review when available.
- Some domains use privacy protection or registry-level restrictions that limit visible registrant information.
- If a domain is no longer delegated to the nameservers associated with your UltraDNS account, that account may no longer be serving authoritative DNS for the domain.
Summary
Domain removal requests are reviewed against the domain's current authoritative nameserver delegation and any other available validation information.
UltraDNS provides notice before removal so the current account can respond if the domain should remain in that account.
