Valimail Monitor creates or updates DMARC records in UltraDNS and requires a Valimail account to access reporting data. Both DNS configuration and account setup must be completed before reporting is available.
Quick Setup Flow
- Enable Valimail Monitor in the UltraDNS portal.
- Wait for the task notification to confirm completion.
- Create or access your Valimail account using a business email address.
- Open the Valimail links provided in the 2 email notifications.
- Log in to the Valimail dashboard to view DMARC reports.
What Happens When You Enable Valimail Monitor
When Valimail Monitor is enabled, UltraDNS performs a bulk operation across all domains in the account. Each domain is checked for eligibility before any changes are made.
- If a domain does not already have a DMARC TXT record, UltraDNS creates one.
- If a domain already has a DMARC record, UltraDNS preserves it and adds the Valimail reporting address to the
ruafield. - The DMARC policy is not changed.
- Newly created records use
p=none, which is monitoring only and does not affect email delivery.
Domain Eligibility and Skipped Domains
Domains that do not meet eligibility requirements are skipped and are not modified.
- Domains with multiple DMARC TXT records
- Domains with an existing Valimail configuration
- Domains with a DMARC record inside a DNS pool
- Secondary zones or alias zones
- Certain DNSSEC signing configurations
A successful enablement message means the process completed without error. It does not mean every domain was modified.
Task Notification and Next Step
After enablement completes, a task notification appears in the UltraDNS portal. This notification includes a link to Valimail.
At this point, DNS changes may already be complete, but reporting is not available until your Valimail account setup is finished.
Valimail Account Registration Requirements
To access reporting data, you must create or access a Valimail account. This account is separate from UltraDNS and does not use the same credentials.
- A business email address associated with a domain is required.
- Public email providers are not accepted.
- You must complete registration by setting a password that meets Valimail requirements.
- The domain entered during signup is validated by Valimail.
If the Domain Is Already Registered
If signup fails because the domain is already taken, that domain is already managed within Valimail. This is not related to UltraDNS configuration.
To proceed:
- Locate an existing Valimail administrator within your organization.
- Request access to the existing Valimail account.
If access cannot be obtained, follow the instructions in the Valimail email or contact Valimail support.
Valimail Registration Emails
During setup, Valimail typically sends two emails. The subject lines will be Welcome - start your DMARC journey with Valimail and New Domain Added.
- An email prompting you to start your DMARC setup, which is used to complete registration and set your password
- An email confirming that a new domain has been added, which confirms the domain is associated with your Valimail account
Both emails are part of the onboarding process and are needed to complete setup.
When Reporting Data Becomes Available
After registration is complete and you log in, you are directed to the Valimail Monitor dashboard. This is where DMARC aggregate reports are displayed.
- Sending sources
- Authentication results
- Potential unauthorized activity
Reporting data begins to populate after DNS changes are in place and reporting is received. UltraDNS does not display Valimail reporting data.
Platform Responsibilities
Support responsibilities are split between UltraDNS and Valimail.
UltraDNS support handles DNS configuration and enablement behavior, including DMARC record creation, DMARC record updates, and eligibility behavior.
Valimail support handles account registration, login issues, domain ownership conflicts, dashboard access, and reporting questions. Valimail also provides support options within its platform.
How to Disable Valimail Monitor
Valimail Monitor can be disabled directly from the UltraDNS interface per domain, not per user. To remove Valimail Monitor from Domains:
- Check the checkbox to the left of the domain in Domains
- Press the Valimail Monitor button towards the top (to the left of the Export button)
- Select Disable Valimail Monitor
There is currently no bulk disable option so these changes must be applied per host.
Escalate for further investigation if domains were modified unexpectedly or eligibility behavior does not match expected results.
Important Notes
- Valimail Monitor makes DNS changes only where allowed.
- Monitoring mode uses
p=none. - Email delivery is not affected by enablement.
- Reporting is not available until Valimail account setup is complete.
