UltraDNS includes multiple reporting tools that provide different types of DNS, monitoring, and account activity data.
Each report is designed to answer a specific operational question. Choosing the correct report can help you find the information you need more quickly and avoid reviewing unrelated data.
This guide explains which UltraDNS report to use based on the information you are trying to find.
Which Report Should I Use?
| If You Need To Know... | Use This Report |
|---|---|
| How much DNS traffic am I receiving? | Query Analytics |
| Which hostnames receive the most DNS traffic? | Host Response Report |
| Which client networks are generating DNS queries? | Advanced Client IP Report |
| Which queries are generating NXDOMAIN responses? | Advanced NXDomain Report |
| Who changed a DNS record or configuration? | Audit Log |
| When was a DNS record modified? | Audit Log |
| How does DNS response volume compare across different time periods? | Response Comparison Report |
| Are there DNS configuration or DNSSEC issues? | DNS Health Check |
| Are monitoring probes succeeding or failing? | Probe Statistics Report |
| When did failover or failback events occur? | Failover Report |
DNS Traffic and Query Reports
Use these reports when you need information about DNS traffic, query volume, hostname activity, response trends, or query behavior.
Query Analytics
Use Query Analytics when you need a DNS query report.
This report can help you:
- Review total DNS query volume.
- Identify the most queried domains.
- Identify the most queried hostnames.
- Review query volume trends over time.
- Investigate unexpected increases in DNS traffic.
If you need to know how much DNS traffic your domains are receiving, Query Analytics is typically the best place to start.
Response Comparison Report
Use the Response Comparison Report when you need to compare DNS response volume across different dates or reporting periods.
This report can help you:
- Compare historical reporting periods.
- Review daily, weekly, or monthly trends.
- Identify significant increases or decreases in response volume.
- Analyze long-term traffic patterns.
Host Response Report
Use the Host Response Report when you need hostname-level DNS response data.
This report can help answer questions such as:
- Which hostnames receive the most traffic?
- Which records are actively being queried?
- What DNS responses are being returned?
Advanced Client IP Report
Use the Advanced Client IP Report when you need information about the client networks generating DNS requests.
This report can help you:
- Identify major traffic sources.
- Review query activity by client source.
- Investigate unusual DNS query activity.
The Advanced Client IP Report requires the Advanced Reporting feature.
Advanced NXDomain Report
Use the Advanced NXDomain Report when you need to review queries that resulted in NXDOMAIN responses.
An NXDOMAIN response indicates that the requested hostname does not exist.
This report can help you:
- Investigate internal DNS leakage.
- Identify misspelled or incorrect hostnames.
- Investigate application configuration issues.
- Review unnecessary DNS traffic.
The Advanced NXDomain Report requires the Advanced Reporting feature.
Configuration and Account Activity Reports
Audit Log
Use the Audit Log when you need to review configuration activity within your UltraDNS account.
The Audit Log can help answer questions such as:
- Who made a change?
- When was a record modified?
- When was a domain updated?
- What configuration changes were made?
The Audit Log records account and configuration activity. It does not contain DNS query traffic data.
DNS Health Reports
DNS Health Check
Use DNS Health Check when you need to evaluate a domain for common DNS configuration issues.
This report can identify issues related to:
- Name server configuration.
- SOA configuration.
- DNSSEC validation.
- Mail-related DNS configuration.
- General DNS best practice recommendations.
Health Status Report
The Health Status Report provides a consolidated view of DNS Health Check results across domains within the account.
Traffic Management Reports
Probe Statistics Report
Use the Probe Statistics Report when you need to review monitoring results for supported traffic management services.
This report can be used with:
- SiteBacker pools.
- Traffic Controller pools.
- Simple Load Balancing pools.
- Simple Monitor / Failover pools.
The Probe Statistics Report is useful for reviewing probe success and failure rates, validating monitoring behavior, and troubleshooting application availability.
Failover Report
Use the Failover Report when you need to review failover and failback events for supported traffic management services.
This report can help answer questions such as:
- When did a failover occur?
- When did a failback occur?
- Which monitored resources were affected?
- When did service return to a normal state?
Important Notes
- Not all reporting features are available on every UltraDNS account.
- Some reports require the Advanced Reporting feature.
- If a report described in this guide is not available in your account, contact your account administrator or UltraDNS Support.
- Use Audit Log reports for configuration and account activity investigations.
- Use traffic and analytics reports for DNS query and response data investigations.
