This article explains how to use the Snapshot feature in UltraDNS to create and manage backups of a DNS zone. It applies when you want to preserve a point-in-time copy of a domain’s configuration before making changes.
When to Use This Article
- You are preparing to make significant DNS changes.
- You want a backup of the current zone configuration.
- You need to restore a previous version of a DNS zone.
What the Snapshot Feature Does
The Snapshot feature creates a saved copy of a domain’s DNS configuration at a specific point in time. This allows you to restore the zone to a previous state if needed.
Snapshots do not affect live DNS resolution when created. They serve as backups for recovery purposes.
How to Create a Snapshot
- Log in to the UltraDNS portal.
- Navigate to the domain you want to back up.
- Access the Snapshot or backup section.
- Select the option to create a new snapshot.
- Confirm the action.
How to Restore a Snapshot
- Navigate to the Snapshot section for the domain.
- Select the desired snapshot from the list.
- Choose the restore option.
- Confirm the restore action.
Verification
After restoring a snapshot, review the DNS records in the portal to confirm they reflect the expected configuration. Allow time for DNS propagation if changes affect live resolution.
Important Notes
- Restoring a snapshot overwrites the current DNS configuration.
- Snapshots are domain-specific and must be managed per zone.
- Always review the selected snapshot carefully before restoring.
