The following is to determine categorization of recursive source IP in the latest version of IP Intelligence database.
- Run the following from a command line from a location receiving the wrong answer:
nslookup whoami.ultradns.net. or dig whoami.ultradns.net- Enter the IP address returned by the previous test at http://jumphost.ops.ultradns.net/geoip/geoIPCheck.htm
- Enter the pool name next to GeoIP Pool Name
- Under Query Type select the record type of pool name
- Enter the public IP address of the client next to Client IP
- Leave TCP box unchecked
- Leave Dedicated box unchecked
- Leave Ultra2 box unchecked
- Leave Customer with default value
- Press Lookup (can take 30 sec to 1 min for results to show)
- Verify the Output for any errors or discrepancies
Additional Information
IPv6 sources will be considered a part of the "Uncategorized" group within Directional DNS.
Insight Into Step 1: 'nslookup whoami.ultradns.net' and 'dig whoami.ultradns.net' show the external recursive DNS source IP for a user. This is what Directional DNS uses when determining what answer to give. It (and not the user's physical location) is the starting point to any kind of Directional DNS testing or troubleshooting.
The test needs to be run from the location you're trying to test. If you have a user saying they get the wrong directional answer, that user needs to run the whoami.ultrands.net test.
Nslookup tests need trailing dots after the hostnames. Without trailing dots, nslookup might suffix domain names to your hostname and generate false errors.
Insight Into Step 5: If the user's public IP is (physically) in a different geographic region is, they will get answers for the location of their DNS server and not for their physical location. Authoritative DNS only communicates with recursive DNS and not directly with end client. As a result, answers can only be given based on recursive DNS location.
- If country or state is not the correct location for user's recursive DNS server contact IP Intelligence or perform source IP workaround
- If the country or state is the correct location for the user's recursive DNS server, test categorization in UltraDNS's currently installed version of IP Intelligence
