This article explains whether HTTPS can be used with Web Forwarding in UltraDNS and what is required to enable secure HTTPS redirects. Standard Web Forwarding does not support HTTPS by default and must be enabled separately at the account level.
When to Use This Article
- You want to configure Web Forwarding using HTTPS instead of HTTP.
- You are attempting to create a secure redirect and it is not working.
- You need to understand the requirements for HTTPS Web Forwarding in UltraDNS.
Does Web Forwarding Support HTTPS
Web Forwarding in UltraDNS supports HTTP by default. HTTPS Web Forwarding is not enabled automatically and requires additional configuration at the account level.
To use HTTPS for Web Forwarding, the HTTPS Redirect feature must first be enabled for your UltraDNS account. This is handled by Support and is not available for self-service activation in the portal.
Why HTTPS Web Forwarding Requires Additional Setup
HTTPS redirects require a valid TLS certificate to securely terminate the connection before redirecting the request. Because certificate handling is involved, HTTPS Web Forwarding is treated as an account-level feature rather than a default capability.
Until this feature is enabled and a certificate is configured, Web Forwarding will only function over HTTP.
How to Enable HTTPS Web Forwarding
To enable HTTPS Web Forwarding, submit a request to Support to activate the HTTPS Redirect feature for your account. Follow the instructions in the Related article below.
What to Do After HTTPS Is Enabled
After Support enables HTTPS Web Forwarding for your account, you must upload a TLS certificate and configure the HTTPS redirect. Follow the instructions in the Related article below.
Verification
HTTPS Web Forwarding is working correctly when requests to your source URL over HTTPS successfully redirect to the configured destination without certificate errors.
Important Notes
- HTTPS Web Forwarding is not enabled by default and must be activated by Support.
- A valid TLS certificate is required for HTTPS redirects to function.
- HTTP Web Forwarding will continue to function even if HTTPS is not enabled.
